Bikepacking GR 50 day 4: saved by the bell

What you always do as a ‘montangarde’ is to gain as much as information as possible about the planned route along the way. The guardian (housekeeper) of the refuge de Buffère, also a mountain biker, advised us against the planned start of the day. A few high cols were exchanged for smoothly rolling kilometres around the massif along the idyllic shores of the Clarée.

30 km in a rather descending line, quite fun! We had eaten the first 35 km of the day as easily as our sweet biscuits for breakfast. After the pizza stop in Briançon, playtime was over. The flame was put back into the pan.

We were given 3 climbs, which resulted in beautiful panoramas each time. A major hike section was wisely circumvented by a smoothly curving climb over a gravel road. Paddling and saving energy have now become our motto. NOTE: You will never be able to call a climb curving 800 meters at 30 degrees Celsius with a bicycle of 25 kg smooth.

Because the day always ends with looking for a suitable camp spot, which means enough water and a flat piece of grass (if possible with a fresh beer or bottle of wine, a nice view and the Swedish tanning team), it is not always clear where to find the finish line. That turned out to be the case today. The search for water took us to the bottom of the valley, 10 km further in the stage of day 5. Here goes our camp with a view on the col. 90 km and 2600 altitude meters.
